Press Statement
As
the August 9th gubernatorial election draws near in Osun State, we
urge the people of Osun State to remain resilient, strong, determined and
resist any attempt to intimidate and muscle them against their will. Osun
people should understand that their action and inaction on August 9, will
determine what will happen to them in the next four years.
We
reassure the people of Osun State that the eyes of both the local and
international communities are focusing on Osun. No singular act of intimidation
will be treated with levity. We have alerted various local and international
institutions of human right and they are keeping an eye on Osun State. Stand
your ground, walk in groups and be your brother’s keeper.
We
are aware that thousands of troops, comprising the Military, DSS, Police, NSCDC
and even the Customs have been deployed to Osun. As much as this is against
international practices in a democratic election, President Goodluck Jonathans
has insisted that it is for the protection of lives and properties in Osun
State. We advise the people of Osun State to take the president's words
in-situ and assume he means them.
Therefore,
we urge Osun people to move about their lawful duties with pride and boldness,
cast their ballots for their favorite candidate and stand aside to make sure
their votes are counted, recorded and announced without manipulation. They
should strongly resist those that will share some cups of rice and bags of salt
that will barely last for weeks to manipulate the voters and steal their
destiny for four years.
We
advise the Military, Police, DSS and other security personnel’s to exhibit
utmost professionalism devoid of bias and partisanship in the discharge of
their duties. We want to remind the security agents that the comatose state the
security institutions have found themselves today is as a result of inefficient
and bad government caused by rigged and manipulated election. We think the
security agents will be doing themselves lots of good by shunning partisanship
and refusing to frustrate a free and fair election.
The
security personnel’s should remember that they need to go to the hospital when
they are sick, their children go to the same schools with civilians, they ply
on the same road with civilians, they use the same source of power with the
civilians and so should shun any attempt by anyone to manipulate them to favor
an unpopular candidate in the sun election and all other elections.
No
matter the amount of security men and ammunition you see on the day of the
election, take it that they are there to protect you. Refuse to be intimidated
by the fierce looking security men, instead feel secured by their arms and
ammunition. The whole world is watching. Nigerians are watching and the
Almighty God will be watching too.
We
wish Osun people the best as we expect the emergence of the most popular
candidate as the next governor of Osun State. God bless the people of Osun. God
bless Nigeria.
