The accused
Angel of Death, Daniela Poggiali, is a 42-year-old resident of the Italian town
of Lugo. She was taken into custody this weekend and charged with the murder of
Rosa Calderoni, a 78-year-old patient who died from an injection of potassium.
According to
the New York Post, Calderoni
departed unexpectedly after being admitted to the hospital with a routine
illness. Testing revealed the patient passed away with a high level of
potassium in her system. High potassium in the bloodstream can provoke cardiac
arrest.
Central
European News reports, Calderoni’s death launched an investigation that
revealed 38 other patients who had mysteriously died while Poggiali was on
duty.
Coworkers
became suspicious of Poggiali after observing that patients would suddenly
worsen, then die during her shift. They described her as a “cold, polished”
woman who would sometimes sedate patients who bothered her. They also believe
she dosed patients with laxatives to make life more difficult for colleagues
working the shift after her.
A coworker told
Corriere della Sera, “We wondered
whether these deaths could be so frequent without anyone doing anything”.
Police searched
Poggioli’s phone and found a disturbing selfie. Moments after a patient had
died, she snapped a photo of herself giving a ‘thumbs up’ with the deceased
patient at her side.
Prosecutor
Alessandro Mancini was shocked by the photo.
“I can assure
you in that all my professional years of seeing shocking photos, there were few
such as these”.
Poggiali’s
motivation for these murders remains unknown. Her defense will have a difficult
time citing ‘compassion fatigue’ as her actions read more like a compassion
coma.
