AJ+ offers reporting fellowship. Deadline Aug. 1
AJ+, Al
Jazeera's new digital channel, seeks six budding journalists from
across the globe to take part in its first fellowship program. The one-year
fellowship will allow the chosen journalists to hone their crafts autonomously
while also receiving support from Al Jazeera's structured newsgathering
organization.

Free online course in slideshow

Starts Aug. 4
The MulinBlog Online J-School is
offering an online course designed for those seeking to produce engaging visual
stories using consumer equipment and free software programs. The school is a
free program for people of all backgrounds, especially those who are
"absolute beginners," seeking web-based training in digital skills.
The course will cover how to record an interview, take pro-style photos, edit
audio and create slideshows, edit a slideshow and share it on the web.

ICFJ, UN Climate Change Fellowship Deadline Aug. 12
Professional journalists who are fluent
in English and do not regularly cover the environment can apply to the program.
The Climate Change Journalism Virtual Fellowship, a joint program of the United
Nations Foundation and the International Center for Journalists,
will give 10 journalists from Africa, Asia and Europe the opportunity to speak
with climate change experts in virtual briefings on Sept. 3. The three
journalists with the best story ideas will each receive a US$1,000 grant to
pursue reporting on the topic of climate change.

Knight-Mozilla OpenNews Fellowship Deadline Aug. 16
The Knight-Mozilla OpenNews Fellowship offers
developers and technologists in newsrooms worldwide US$60,000 to spend 10
months writing code in collaboration with reporters, designers and newsroom
developers. The following newsrooms will be hosting this year's fellows: The
Guardian in London; La Nacion in Argentina; NPR in Washington; Vox Media in
Austin,Texas, Washington or New York; the Center for Investigative Reporting in
Emeryville, California; The New York Times in New York; and The Washington Post
in Washington or New York.

Thomson Foundation hosts journalism
competition
Deadline Aug. 29
The Thomson Foundation is sponsoring the “young
journalist from the developing world” category at the UK Foreign Press Association (FPA) Awards. Journalists younger
than age 30 working in developing countries with Gross Domestic Product
(GDP) per capita of less than US$20,000 are eligible. Three
finalists will be flown to London for the gala award night in November along
with a host of leading figures from the world of journalism.
