The
Berkman Center for Internet & Society and UNICEF will co-host an
international symposium on children, youth, and digital media at Harvard
University on April 28-30, 2014, to map and explore the global state of
relevant research and practice, share and discuss insights and ideas from the developing
and industrialized world, and encourage collaboration between participants
across regions and continents.
With
a particular focus on voices and issues from the Global South, the symposium
will address both challenges and opportunities children and youth face in the
digital environment, including (but not limited to) issues such as inequitable
access, risks to safety and privacy, skills and digital literacy, and spaces
for participation and civic engagement and innovation.
Bringing
together 150 academics, practitioners, young people, activists,
philanthropists, government officials, and representatives of technology
companies from around the globe, this highly participatory and interactive
event builds upon a multi-year collaboration between the Berkman Center’s Youth
and Media project and UNICEF.
The
symposium contributes to UNICEF’s 2014 State of the World’s Children
thought-leader series, which assembles experts to discuss—twenty five years
after the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)—novel
ways to close the gaps that persist in children’s development and well-being.
Organizations
that work on issues related to children, youth, and digital media are not only
invited to contribute to the symposium, but also encouraged to facilitate and
support collaborations that may emerge from it. Initial symposium collaborators
include PEW Internet,
EU Kids Online, the Internet Society (ISOC), Family Online Safety Institute
(FOSI), and YouthPolicy.org.
