The highlight of President Goodluck
Jonathan’s Democracy Day 2012 (May 29, 2012) speech was renaming the University
of Lagos (UNILAG) after Chief Moshood Abiola, winner of the June 12, 1993,
presidential election that was annulled by dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida.
I think renaming the school
after Moshood Abiola belittles the symbolism of the man and his role in our
democracy.
The National Assembly Complex
(Moshood Abiola Complex), Presidential Villa/Aso Rock (Moshood Abiola House),
or National Stadium, Abuja (Moshood Abiola Stadium) would be more like it!
I hope this is not an attempt to
“regionalize” the June 12 struggle.
